Coming Together Racine

October 24 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join us in honoring and celebrating the First Nations caretakers of this land as we commemorate the renaming of Kipikawi Causeway and pay tribute to the rich culture of the indigenous peoples who call this region home.

First Nations communities have been invited to share their ceremonies and celebrations, providing a unique opportunity to learn from historians and experience their vibrant culture. The event will feature speakers, vendors, delicious food, Native American dancers, music, and traditional ceremonies.

The region now known as Racine County has a deep and storied history, dating back tens of
thousands of years ago.

The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including but not limited to the Potawatomi, Peoria, Menominee, and Ho-Chunk. The name “Racine” has roots in the indigenous heritage of the region. The word “root” (Kipikawi) was given to this area by the Potawatomi Nation due to the extensive roots and snags in the river, a significant waterway for the local tribes. This word was later translated to the French “Racine,” as we know it nowadays.

The river was an essential resource, providing transportation, food, and a gathering place for the indigenous communities who lived in harmony with the land for generations. This connection to the river and the land highlights the deep relationship the Native American people continue to have with the natural environment.

All are welcome to attend.
