James DeKoven—one of the most respected leaders of the Anglo-Catholic Movement and influential in shaping the modern Episcopal Church. This year’s event will feature a special focus on the newly released biography by John E. Magerus\, James DeKoven: Biography of a Famous Yet Forgotten Man.\nJohn Magerus\, former university professor and administrator\, has\, since retirement\, actively pursued his passion for history. He has spent eight years immersed in the archives of the DeKoven Center\, serving as head archivist. That work became the foundation for the first full-length biography of James DeKoven in over 125 years. The resulting book offers a compelling look at the life and legacy of this influential 19th-century Episcopal priest and educator in Wisconsin.\nPerched on the bluffs of Lake Michigan and framed by nationally recognized architecture\, the DeKoven Center stands on the historic campus of Racine College. When the Rev. Dr. James DeKoven arrived in 1859 from St. John’s Hall in Delafield to serve as Warden\, he brought with him a bold vision. Inspired by the design of English colleges\, he reimagined the campus as a residential quadrangle where students and faculty would live\, learn\, and worship together—a close-knit academic community rooted in shared purpose.\nUnder his leadership\, Racine College flourished into a respected institution of higher learning\, drawing distinguished educators and students from across the country. DeKoven himself became a national figure — a gifted preacher\, writer\, and educator\, and a leading voice in the Anglo-Catholic movement. Today\, he is commemorated with a feast day in the Episcopal Church on March 22.\nThe legacy of education that James DeKoven began has continued across generations. This campus has since been home to the Racine Military Academy; the Cove School\, the nation’s first residential special education program; Racine Montessori School; and Spectrum School of the Arts. Today\, the tradition of formation lives on through a growing teaching kitchen that provides hands-on job training in a working commercial kitchen. The historic quadrangle continues to host retreats\, workshops\, joyful weddings\, and events. DESCRIPTION:Can you remember how Downtown Main Street looked 50 years ago or even 13 years ago? Which of your favorite shops and restaurants were in business back then? \nAn exhibition at Photographic Design Gallery & Framing\, 411 Sixth Street\, will answer those questions and have you reminiscing about those special restaurants and shops. This extraordinary exhibit titled Downtown Main Street Then and Now: Five Decades of Change\, put together by owners Brad Jaeck and Carol Hansen\, includes three sets of photos– black and white images of Main St. in the early 70s\, comparable color images from 2012 and current color images that show the same buildings today.  \nThe black and white images from the early 70s were shot by Robert Hartmann\, a Racine architect who has been involved with the design and preservation of Racine buildings for many years. He shot the images when he moved to Racine as reference for a design manual he prepared for restoring Downtown buildings. The recent photos show the efforts by organizations such as Downtown Racine Corporation to improve Racine’s Downtown. \nAccording to Jaeck and Hansen\, the challenge in the project was first shooting the current photos in the right lighting with as few cars as possible in the photos. The photos were then merged into full city blocks approximately 7 inches by 50 inches. Last\, but certainly not least\, was hanging the strips of photos to easily compare the changes through fifty years.   \nLooking back to 2012 when the first exhibit of comparative photos was hung\, Jaeck and Hansen said it was the most popular exhibit they had ever had. Rather than end the exhibit in one month\, the usual time period for an exhibit\, it remained for six months because of its great interest to the community. Images of Zahns\, Eitels and other popular shops brought back many fond memories\, among other things\, of special clothing purchases and other items. The men reminisced about the old cars. \nThe exhibit was expected to end on August 31st\, but due to its popularity\, it will remain on display through the end of September. Last\, but certainly not least\, was hanging the strips of photos to easily compare the changes through fifty years.   \nLooking back to 2012 when the first exhibit of comparative photos was hung\, Jaeck and Hansen said it was the most popular exhibit they had ever had. Rather than end the exhibit in one month\, the usual time period for an exhibit\, it remained for six months because of its great interest to the community. Images of Zahns\, Eitels and other popular shops brought back many fond memories\, among other things\, of special clothing purchases and other items. The men reminisced about the old cars. \nThe exhibit was expected to end on August 31st\, but due to its popularity\, it will remain on display through the end of September. DESCRIPTION:Step back in time on First Friday\, September 6th\, at Photographic Design Gallery & Framing\, 411 Sixth Street to reminisce about the great shops on Sixth Street; Haddons\, Porters\, G. Weiss\, Levin Bros. Ruth Karnes\, Mister Jr.\, Kovach Motors\, to name a few.. By popular demand\, Photographic Design is again showing its best ever exhibit\, Downtown Racine – Then and Now\, but featuring only the buildings on Sixth Street taken in the early 70s by architect Robert Hartmann\, the same buildings photographed by Brad Jaeck and Carol Hansen in 2012 and again in 2024.All have been merged to show the buildings as entire blocks. The Main Street portion will be shown in 2025. The exhibit has been renamed Downtown Sixth Street – Through the Years to reflect its focus on Sixth Street and the addition of 2024 images. Rounding out the evening\, Racine historian Jim Mercier will be showing numerous artifacts from businesses located on Sixth Street many years ago\, including Red Cross Drugs\, Mohr Jones\, Porters and many more.
