SUMMARY:Collection Focus: Don Reitz
DESCRIPTION:Donald (Don) Reitz (1929-2014) holds a special place in contemporary craft\, particularly in ceramics. Not only did he reinvigorate salt and wood firing technique\, but he was also a beloved figure who inspired numerous artists and collectors. \nThis exhibition underscores RAM’s commitment to chronicling the career of Reitz\, who spent 1962-88 living and working in Wisconsin while actively teaching as faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There were already a handful of works by Reitz in RAM’s collection when a recent major gift from Leatrice and Melvin Eagle catapulted the number of his pieces to over 60. This gift established an archive for Reitz and pushed him into the top three-most collected artists working primarily in clay in the collection. \nOpen now through February 3\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Collection Focus: Frances and Michael Higgins
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1940s\, contemporary glass production was given new energy as Frances (1912 – 2004) and Michael (1908 – 1999) Higgins reinvigorated the ancient practice of glass fusing. Capitalizing on the post-World War II interest in bright colors and abstract patterns\, the Higginses produced mostly functional items sold through major retailers and worked with glass companies until they formally established their private studio in Illinois. Frances and Michael’s partnership—both personal and professional—seemed to fuel their creative energy\, and they devoted their lives to creating a seemingly endless array of plates\, bowls\, dishes\, vases\, and more. \nRacine Art Museum recently established an archive collection of over 50 works created collaboratively and individually by the Higginses. For example\, in addition to production glassware\, there is a large\, multi-faceted frieze of trees\, buildings\, and butterflies attributed to Frances and a “treasure chest” of glass\, wood\, and fiber assigned to Michael. This volume of work—a large portion of which debuts in this exhibition—offers a chance to look at modernist glass through the works themselves and through the lens of a creative partnership with nuanced gives and takes. \nHiggins Glass Studio—initially established in the Higginses’ apartment—still exists in Riverside\, Illinois. As per the wishes of the Higginses themselves\, the studio is now owned and operated by Louise and Jonathan Wimmer\, a mother and son who studied with the couple. \nCollection Focus: Frances and Michael Higgins is open January 31 – October 12\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Coming Together Racine
DESCRIPTION:Join us in honoring and celebrating the First Nations caretakers of this land as we commemorate the renaming of Kipikawi Causeway and pay tribute to the rich culture of the indigenous peoples who call this region home. \nFirst Nations communities have been invited to share their ceremonies and celebrations\, providing a unique opportunity to learn from historians and experience their vibrant culture. The event will feature speakers\, vendors\, delicious food\, Native American dancers\, music\, and traditional ceremonies. \nThe region now known as Racine County has a deep and storied history\, dating back tens of\nthousands of years ago. \nThe area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes\, including but not limited to the Potawatomi\, Peoria\, Menominee\, and Ho-Chunk. The name “Racine” has roots in the indigenous heritage of the region. The word “root” (Kipikawi) was given to this area by the Potawatomi Nation due to the extensive roots and snags in the river\, a significant waterway for the local tribes. This word was later translated to the French “Racine\,” as we know it nowadays. \nThe river was an essential resource\, providing transportation\, food\, and a gathering place for the indigenous communities who lived in harmony with the land for generations. This connection to the river and the land highlights the deep relationship the Native American people continue to have with the natural environment. \nAll are welcome to attend.

SUMMARY:David Clark's All about Billy Joel
DESCRIPTION:David Clark’s All About Joel\nWednesday\, July 10\, 2024 | Doors Open: 5:30PM\, Show Starts: 7PM\nDavid Clark’s “ALL ABOUT JOEL” is a musical tribute conceived and presented with a tremendous amount of detail by Long Island veteran singer/piano player David Clark. He continues to gain attention and popularity across the country with stunningly accurate piano playing\, lead vocals\, and an eerily similar stage look to the Piano Man himself while engaging the audience with wit and humor. Having been a part of the Long Island & NY area music scene since 1985\, he has carved out a solid reputation as a piano player\, singer\, and performer at countless private events and concerts around the northeastern tri-state area and beyond. All of these experiences have led him to the present day — staying connected to his piano/vocal roots and his childhood hero by presenting a tribute to the music he loves\, from the very singer/songwriter/performer who inspired and motivated him at the age of 10 years old to pursue a life of music…BILLY JOEL!

SUMMARY:DeKoven Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate James DeKoven at the DeKoven Center\nAll are invited to attend this year’s DeKoven Day celebration on Tuesday\, September 23\, 2025\, honoring the life and legacy of the Rev. James DeKoven—one of the most respected leaders of the Anglo-Catholic Movement and influential in shaping the modern Episcopal Church. This year’s event will feature a special focus on the newly released biography by John E. Magerus\, James DeKoven: Biography of a Famous Yet Forgotten Man.\nJohn Magerus\, former university professor and administrator\, has\, since retirement\, actively pursued his passion for history. He has spent eight years immersed in the archives of the DeKoven Center\, serving as head archivist. That work became the foundation for the first full-length biography of James DeKoven in over 125 years. The resulting book offers a compelling look at the life and legacy of this influential 19th-century Episcopal priest and educator in Wisconsin.\nPerched on the bluffs of Lake Michigan and framed by nationally recognized architecture\, the DeKoven Center stands on the historic campus of Racine College. When the Rev. Dr. James DeKoven arrived in 1859 from St. John’s Hall in Delafield to serve as Warden\, he brought with him a bold vision. Inspired by the design of English colleges\, he reimagined the campus as a residential quadrangle where students and faculty would live\, learn\, and worship together—a close-knit academic community rooted in shared purpose.\nUnder his leadership\, Racine College flourished into a respected institution of higher learning\, drawing distinguished educators and students from across the country. DeKoven himself became a national figure — a gifted preacher\, writer\, and educator\, and a leading voice in the Anglo-Catholic movement. Today\, he is commemorated with a feast day in the Episcopal Church on March 22.\nThe legacy of education that James DeKoven began has continued across generations. This campus has since been home to the Racine Military Academy; the Cove School\, the nation’s first residential special education program; Racine Montessori School; and Spectrum School of the Arts. Today\, the tradition of formation lives on through a growing teaching kitchen that provides hands-on job training in a working commercial kitchen. The historic quadrangle continues to host retreats\, workshops\, joyful weddings\, and events. Through it all\, the DeKoven Center remains a place that welcomes all who seek rest\, reflection\, and reconnection.\nDeKoven Day begins on Tuesday\, September 23rd at 1:00 p.m. a Eucharistic service in St. John’s Chapel\, followed by a reception and book signing in Taylor Hall featuring John E. Magerus. Admission is free\, and copies of the book will be available for purchase.
