The judges also stated they were extremely impressed with the quality and workmanship of the public art pieces. Kaaren and Tom are currently exhibiting at the Racine Art Museum. The Artists are known for their sensitive depictions of aspects of nature from the landscape to its birds, fish and animals.
The first place bird winner, Racine Raven by artist Joseph Gagnepain, is a 6’ tall crow made out of materials salvaged from the roadside including shredded highway truck tires, bits of highway metal, and highway patching tar. Joe is a graduate of the Chicago Academy for the Arts High School and attended Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He has been a full-time freelance artist since 2000. Some of his work is exhibited at Pastiche gallery & gifts in Downtown Racine.
The Great Bluez Heron was created by Robert Andersen of Racine. The body of the bird is steel reinforced polystyrene covered with sculptamold, acrylic paste and cloth and is shown complete with trombone. A Racine native, Andersen has been an art teacher in the Racine Unified School District since 1972 and an active local artist for three decades. He received his bachelor of science degree in art from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and his master’s degree in education from Carthage College. Andersen has also participated in all of Downtown Racine’s public art events.
The third place bird winner is Al, The Ancient One which was created by Peg Ducommun of Racine. Her recreation of an extinct primitive toothed bird of the upper Jurassic period of Europe is made from plaster reinforced with mesh screen in between two layers. The bird was carved, stained and antiqued to resemble a big fossil. Peg is a self-taught artist who has participated in all of Downtown Racine’s public art events.
The first place birdbath winner, Flamingo Bathing, is by Jerry Treiber. His creation is a flamingo bird fiber glassed over the top of the bird bath. Jerry is a life-long resident of Racine and a designer and artist with two degrees. He is the graphics manager at Quick Cable in Franksville. Over the years, he has helped design and build over 60 floats for Racine 4th of July parades. Jerry also participated in “Downtown Bears It All” and “Downtown Summer Splash”.
Watermelon Loon, created by Racine sculptor Bill Reid, is made of painted steel. Bill received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and is currently the Artist in Residence at Prairie School. Recognized around the world as one of the leading fabulists, Bill has been making painted steel sculptures for over twenty years. His work has gained him numerous awards and has allowed him over a dozen museum exhibitions across the country.
The third place birdbath winner is Tweety’s Vasque pour oiseaux, by Tammy Easton. She decorated her birdbath with glass, stones and garden image tiles. She is an artist of many media both traditional and digital. She received a commercial art degree and studied web and animation at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Easton participated in “Dog Days of Summer”, “Downtown Bears It All” and “Downtown Summer Splash”.
These award-winning birds and birdbaths are among the 75 creations now on display in Downtown Racine. They will be on exhibit until September 5 when they will be removed from the sidewalks and storefronts to prepare for the Bye Bye Birdie Auction and Raffle. The auction will be held on Saturday, September 9 at Memorial Hall in Downtown Racine.
